Declaration

Scone, Hill of Belief, Scotland

Example of a Moot Hill Court Dispute Hearing.

Atop the green mound, a beadle calls the people to gather.

The Bailie raises his staff of office, declaring the moot open.

Two neighbours bring a dispute over a strayed cow.

Witnesses speak. The council deliberates. A fine of one silver penny is proclaimed, symbolically placed in a wooden bowl.

The herald closes the court, declaring peace restored in the parish.
